The district of Bijapur is located in the northern part of state of Karnataka. The history of the city dates back to the 10th and 11th centuries AD. It was built by the Kalyani Chalukyas and was named as Vijayapura (the City of Victory). Later during 13th and 14th centuries, the city was conquered by Bahamani Sultante and the names Vijapur and Bijapur came into being. Adil Shahi dynasty played a major role in the architectural development of the city with many mosques, tombs and palaces around the city. Later on the Mughals and the British conquered the city.

The population of Bijapur according to the 2011 census stands at 2,175,102. The population comprises 51% of males and 49% of females. The population mainly comprises of Hindus (lingayats) and Sunni Muslims with scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. Lambani or Tanda tribe people have settled in this place long time ago.

The literacy ratio is 69%. The chief occupation of the district is agriculture and farming. Crops such as Jowar, maize, bajra, wheat, red gram, Bengal gram and green gram are produced in this region. The district is also home to many educational institutions such medical colleges and dental colleges, nursing colleges, engineering colleges, polytechnic colleges, ayurvedic medical colleges and Islamic colleges, etc.

Some of the tourist attractions in Bijapur include Gol Gumbaz, Jumma Masjid, Malik-e-maidan, Uppali Buruj, Chand Bawdi, Asar Mahal, Gagan Mahal, an 80 foot tall statue of Lord Shiva.
