Bangalore is also called Garden City. It is located on the Deccan Plateau in the south eastern part of Karnataka. It is India's third most populous city and home to some of the high tech industries. Bangalore is named as Silicon Valley of India due to its position as the nation's leading I.T. exporter.

The name Bangalore is the converted version of the town's name Bengaluru in the Kannada language. Legend goes that once the King of Vijayanagara lost his way in forest when he went for hunting. He came upon a lone hut in the forest where he taken on an old woman who gave him baked beans called Benda Kalu in Karnataka. The king was happy and grateful he gave the name Benda Kalu Ooru the place of baked beans.

Bengaluru has an estimated population of 5.8 million as per the census of 2001. 79.4% population of the city is Hindus, 13.4% Muslims, while Christians and Jains comprise for 5.8% and 1.1% of the population.

Bengaluru is situated at an elevated height of 920 meters, above the sea level. The highest point is called Vidyaranyaura Doddabettahalli. The topology is flat except for a central ridge there is no major rivers flowing through the city and much of the city's sewage is carried by the rivers Arkavathi and Vrishabhavathi together.

Bengaluru is blessed with moderate climate throughout the year. The month of April is hottest with an average temperature of 33.6°C and the coolest month is January with an average low temperature of 15.1°C. Bengaluru is considered as one of the coolest cities of India. The monsoon begins in the month of July with an average rainfall recorded 859 mm.

History

The city got his name from the word Benda Kalu Ooru, which means boiled beans in the local Kannada language. The present day city was designed by Kempe Gowda in 1537.Thecity was also captured by the father of Shivaji in 1638 which was then captured by Aurangzeb's army in 1687. Bengaluru was bloomed with modern facilities like railways, telegraph, postal and police departments under the influence of British.

Texas Instruments was the first multinational company set up in Bengaluru.It is the fast growing metropolis city with second highest literacy rate after Mumbai. Besides Kannada, languages spoken are English, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. Small section of Konkani and Marathi speakers are also found. 47.5% of the population is made up of women.

Bengaluru economy is supported to the major extent by many large scale industries like HAL, BHEL, NAL, HMT & BEML along with many I.T. companies. The ISRO has its headquarters in the city. It is one of the premier economic centre in India.

Culture

Bengaluru is the south Indian city but the culture represents cosmopolitan outlook of the people. One can see blend of traditions with the modern culture. Hinduism is the major religion.

The main language spoken by the people is Kannada along with other regional languages and English. Bangalore is the home for various states of people so the cuisine reflects social and economical diversity of Bengaluru. The regional cuisine is predominantly vegetarian with coconut and rice ruling the roost. Udupi restaurant serving traditional south Indian foods are very popular. Road side vendors selling North and South Indian food, tea stalls and fast food corners are very popular in the city.

Bengaluru is also famous for classical music and dance particularly during Ramanavmi and Ganesh Chaturthi festivals. The fairs and festivals reflect rich cultural side of the city. The oldest and most important festival celebrated is Karaga which is celebrated in in summers, Kadalekaye Parishe is a winter festival,Pongal, etc. Even Deepavali , the festivals of Lights, is celebrated with lots of excitement. It has a lively Kannada Theater that organizes various theatres and programs. The Bangalore Habba is a cultural program where artists from all over the India participate in the event.
