Koderma district, one of the 24 districts in the state of Jharkhand, was formed on 10th of April 1994 by taking out a portion of Hazaribagh district.

As per the census conducted in the year 2011, Kodarma district had a total population of 717,169 of which male and female were 367,952 and 349,217 respectively. There was 32.59 percent change in the population compared to population in the year 2001.

The Koderma district area spans 1500 square kilometer and is surrounded by the Nawada district of Bihar in the north, the Gaya district on the west, The Giridh district of Jharkand on the east and the Hazaribagh district on the south. Koderma is the administrative headquarters and has a latitude and a longitude of 24.47 N and 85.6 E respectively. The Koderma district has two towns, Koderma and Tilaiya and six blocks.

Reserve forest covers most of the northern portion of the district. The district has a rich mica deposits in its lands and is therefore called 'Mica capital of India'. The district is also rich in natural resources. These industries form the main source of income of the people.
