History:

PPulwama is one of the 22 districts of Jammu and Kashmir and is known as ‘Anand of Kashmir’ and ‘Dudha-Kul of Kashmir’. It came into existence in the year 1979. Earlier, it was a part of Anantnag district.

Population:

As per the records of the 2001 census, the total population of Pulwama is 6,49,000 people. Males constitute 59% of the total population while females are in a minority of 41%. The average literacy rate of the district is 62%, which is slightly higher than the national average of 59.5%.

Geography:

Pulwama is situated 33°53′N 74°55′E at an average height of 5347 feet a.s.l. It is located in the tranquil mountain range covered with snow and lush green landscape. Some of the major tourist attractions of the district are Aharbal, Kungwattan, Nagberan, Shikargah, Hurpora and Tarsar Marsar.

Culture:

Agriculture is the main source of income for the residents of this district. Paddy, oilseeds and fodder are the main products of this region. This area is known for the cultivation of saffron. Some of the famous religious places and historical monuments of the region are Avantishwar temple, Payer temple, Asar Sharief Pintoora, Shrine of Shah Hamdan and Jama Masjid Shopian.
