History:

Kathua is one of the 22 districts of Jammu and Kashmir. It has a diverse topography endowed with rich agricultural areas along the Punjab/Kashmir border, far-reaching plains that are spread eastward to the foothills of the Himalayas and a mountainous region in the east.

Population:

As per the records of the 2001 census, the total population of Kathua is 5,50,084 people. Men constitute 54% of the total population while women are in a minority with 46% in proportion. Kathua has an average literacy rate of 72%, which is higher than the Indian national average of 59.5%. Of this, the male literacy rate is 76% and female literacy is 67%. This is mainly a Hindu dominated area; however, Muslim and Sikh communities also dwell here.

Geography:

Kathua is situated 32°35′N 75°30′E at an altitude of 1007 feet a.s.l. The climate of this region is predominantly sub-tropical.

Culture:

Wheat and paddy constitutes the staple food in the plain tehsils while maize is popular in the hilly tehsils. The traditional language of Kathua is Dogri. However, several pahari languages are also spoken in the mountainous area of the east. The basic medium of education remains English, Hindi and Urdu. Basohli town of Kathua district is widely known for its paintings.
