History:

Kargil is one of the 22 districts of Jammu and Kashmir. This district came into existence in July 1979. Earlier, it was a part of Ladakh district. Kargil was at the forefront owing to the Indo-Pak conflict during the year 1999.

Population:

As per the records of the 2001 census, the total population of Kargil is 1,19,307 people. The district is inhabited by four main communities. These are Muslims, Tibetan Buddhists, Hindus and Sikhs.

Geography:

Kargil is located near the line of control. It is situated 34°57′N 76°1′E at an altitude ranging from 8000 feet to 18000 feet a.s.l.

Culture:

Tibetan contact in the past has left an intense influence on the people of Kargil. However, after an extensive spread of Shia Islam, the people of this region drew closer to the Persian culture. This is apparent by the meticulous use of Persian words and phrases in the local songs and folk music. Many customs and rituals, which are common to both the Muslims as well as Buddhists, are reflected in various social gatherings and ceremonies such as marriages. Kargil has a mixed ethnic population and thus there are many regional dialects that are spoken.
