History:

Baramula, as the name suggests, means a boar's molar place. This district is the third largest city of J&K. In the pre-independence era, it was an established trade centre and was known as the gateway of Kashmir. It is famous for religious and historical places, and production of apple.

Population:

As per the records of the 2001 census, the total population of Baramula is 11,50,652 people. Males constitute 55% of the population while remaining are females who are in a minority. The average literacy rate in Baramula is 65%, which is higher than the national average of 59.5%.

Geography:

Baramula is blessed with stunning beauty. It is situated at 34°11'53″N 74°21'49″E at 5226 feet a.s.l. It is located on the international border with Pakistan. This is the largest district in the entire Kashmir valley in terms of population as well as area.

Culture:

Baramula is known for its rich in cultural heritage. The predominant language of this district is Kashmiri. However, some adherents of Sikhism speak Punjabi as well. Areas adjoining the LOC have some speakers of Pashto while Hindi and Gujari are spoken by some in other areas of the district.
