History:

As the name suggests, Anantnag is a place with countless springs. This glorious city came into existence around 5000 B.C. and is located in the Kashmir valley. It has been the financial and commercial capital since ancient times.

Population:

According to the records of the 2001 census, the total population of the city is 183,437 people. Males are in a majority with 55% of the population while females constitute only 45% of the total. The average literacy rate of the city is 79%.

Geography:

Anantnag is situated 33.73°N 75.15°E at 5,300 feet a.s.l. and at a distance of 53 km from the state capital.

Culture:

• The city has inherited a rich culture and is known for various handicrafts such as shawl weaving, Gabbah and Namdah manufacturing. These handicrafts have been the bread earning trades for the natives.
• Bhand Pather: This is a traditional folk theatre performed by a group of artists.
• Chakri: This is a major and popular form of Kashmiri folk music.
• Sufiana music: This form was originally introduced from Iran in 15th century. In present times, it is an established classical music with a blend of various Indian Ragas.

Hafiz Nagma:

A dance form performed to accompany Sufiana music. The dancer is a female while males play different instruments used in Sufiana music.
