Teressa Island
The island of Teressa in the Nicobar Islands group is towards the Western direction of Camorta Island and in the northwestern direction lies the Katchal Island. Also the northern region is surrounded by Chowrais and Bompoka in the Eastern direction. The north side area of the Teressa Island is at a height of 87 meters. The population of the village is around 2,000 and has the combination of people from Bengal, Kalasi, Minyuk and Aloorang. The total area covering the island is around 101.26 Km2. The Tsunami of 2004 and the earth quake in the Indian Ocean brought heavy damage to this place thus dividing the island in to two sections.
Location
Bompoka Island lies nearer to this place. Also, Chura is the adjacent island. In the western direction, we have Camorta Island and towards northwest lies the Katchal island. The Bompoka Island lying nearby holds a light house.
Activities to Do
Craft work is famous in this area. The locals make canoes and toys through the use of woods and using this through a knife they put through small pieces of cloth. This is very popular and wanted by the people visiting this area. In Chaura earthern pots are famous, and Teressa island women through clay make very good pots by hands. Initially they ignite the pots and light fire through sticks and dry leaves and then give a proper shape later. Brown colored pots with chocolate brown lines are readied before they heat them up.
The silence and calmness of this area, is enjoyed by the tourists, as also the various craft works of the local inhabitants.
How to Reach
From Nancowry Island it takes around 2.5 hours to travel by water and about 1 hour and 35 minutes from Port Blair through chopper.
