South Andaman Island
The southern end of the Andaman Island forms the South Andaman Island part which has Port Blair as its capital. Many areas in this place are not allowed for people who are not Indians. They would be permitted to travel after obtaining due transit permit from the Government’s Home department. As in case of other places, this was also affected terribly by the Earth Quake which occurred in the Indian Ocean during 2004 causing several casualties.
It is notable that the South Andaman is the main island in the group of Andaman and Nicobar islands. The southern portion of the mid part of Andaman Island covers this place. Only a slim guide brings a separation to this place from here. This island covers 93 kms in length, and 31 kms in width with an overall area of 1348 km2. The approximate population of the island is 2,00,000. When compared to the northern portion of the Andaman Islands, the South Andaman holds less mountain areas. The maximum height of the mountain reach is around 500 meters.
Before 1991 the area had only one Police District viz Port Blair. Subsequently on separation of this in to two districts, Andaman and Nicobar Police Districts were made separate in to two. However, in 2006, the Andaman Police District was further divided in to two districts viz South Andaman and North and Middle Andaman Districts.
