Munroe Island
The fabulous Munroe Island is situated at the conflux of Kallada River and Ashtamudi Lake in district Kollam, Kerala. The island, which is easily accessible by rail, road and water navigation, is 25 kms from Kollam via road, 38 kms in the direction of north from Paravur,25 kms from Karunagapally and 12 kms west from Kundara. The village of Mundrothuruth that includes neighboring small villages has a population of 9,599.
The Munroe Island is named after Colonel John Munro of erstwhile Princely State of Travancore and it measures 13.5 square kms in area. The British Empire established their hegemony in southern part of India including the state of Travancore. A resident was nominated by the British Empire as the head of Travancore, and Colonel Colin Macaulay was the first resident, followed by John Munro. Munro administered the land reclamation endeavors in the area where River Kallada joins Ashtamudi Lake.
The Munroe Island is popular among the tourists and travelers for coir retting process, prawns feeding, fishing, coir weaving, migratory bird watch, waterways, lagoons, coconut farms, narrow canals, mangrove plants, lake shores and many more.

People who visit this wonderful island are able to explore the village life to its fullest, unaffected by the usual chaos and commotion of the city. A cruise will pass through splendid waterways, zigzag canals and water-bound villages. The full day cruise will take six hours with lunch. It usually departs at 10:00 AM and arrives at 4:00 PM. The tour includes travelling from Kollam to the island, four hours canoe ride, lunch being provided in a village and travelling back to Kollam. The half day cruise will take 4 hours and it starts at 10:00 AM and ends at 2:30 PM. The tour includes transfer from district Kollam to the Island, two hours canoe ride and coming back to Kollam.

Events / Festivals in Munroe Island
Craft Festival: The yearly craft festival is organized by Kollam District in partnership with state and central government in December-January. Apart from the beautiful demonstration and sale of different types of arts and crafts products, there are also tribal and folk performances which enthrall the travelers and visitors.
Chamayavilakku: It is a distinctive festival which is celebrated in Kottamkulangara Devi Temple in Chavara, 13 kilometers from Kollam, held yearly in March/ April. The festival is celebrated during the night and several strong men actually dress themselves as ladies as an integral part of the contributions made to the divinity.

Mulachanthara Temple: It is a very renowned temple in Munroe Island. The temple is actually dedicated to Lord Ganapathy, Krishna and Goddess Durga and Bhadra. Thiru Utsav, Pradishta Varshikam and Sapthaha Mahothsavam are some of the major events organized at the temple. Pattamthuruthu Church: The church was built in AD 1878 and is the earliest church on the Munroe Island. This gorgeous lake side church continues to attract tourists from all over the place. Palliyamthuruth: It is another spectacular tourist destination in Munroe Island. Palliyamthuruth is a piece of land in the middle of Ashtamudi Lake.
