National Sugar Institute
The National Sugar Institute(NSI) was founded in 1936 is a research institute that provides training and advice for sugar and its allied industries and is regulated by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. It offers research, technical training and education in all the technologies and sciences involved in the sugar industry and its allied fields and its campus is situated in Kalyanpur, Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh, India).
History
In 1920, the Indian Sugar Committee installed by the Government of India pointed out the need for an institution to undertake research in sugar technology. Similar recommendations were made in 1928 by the Royal Commission in Agriculture and again in 1930 by the Tariff Board. Finally, in October, 1936 the British Government of India instituted The Imperial Institute of Sugar Technology at Kanpur in the present-day state of Uttar Pradesh. The administration of the institute was done by the Imperial Council of Agricultural Research. The Institute was formed out of the Department of Sugar of the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI) and for a long time even after the independence of India, it was maintained inside the HBTI campus. In 1944, an Indian Central Sugarcane Committee was created and the Imperial Institute of Sugar Technology was under its administration. After India’s independence, the institute was renamed to The Indian Institute of Sugar Technology (I.I.S.T.). The Development Council for Sugar Industry was formed as per the Industries (Development and Regulation) Act of 1951 and the duties of the Indian Central Sugarcane Committee were curtailed from 1st January, 1954 and the Institute came under the administration of the Ministry of Food & Agriculture, Government of India.
The Institute was christened again as National Sugar Institute (N.S.I.) during April, 1957 and in 1963 the present campus of Kalyanpur was inaugurated.
