Film & Television Institute Of India
The Film and Television Institute of India or popularly known as FTII is India’s premier institute for training in various talents in the film and television industries. The campus of FTII is located in the iconic Prabhat Film Studios in Pune, Maharashtra, India. FTII is also a part of the International Liaison Centre of Schools of Cinema and Television (CILECT).
History
The FTII has a proud legacy of the Prabhat film company on whose grounds the institute was initially set up in 1960 as the ‘The Film Institute of India’. The Municipal Corporation of Pune later declared the sites of Prabhat Studios as heritage sites with a view to maintain and preserve them as a part of the nation’s cultural history and only the FTII is permitted to use the premises.
The Television centre was located in New Delhi which was merged with the Film institute of India during 1971-1974 and moved to Pune, thus creating the present day Film and Television Institute of India. The primary concern of the Television department of the FTII is the training of employees of the Doordarshan government television network.
Organization
The FTII is an autonomous body – registered as per the Societies’ Registration Act of 1860 - that is only regulated by the means of policies and funding, by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India.
The administration and organization of FTII consists of three levels or departments as follows:
- Governing Council: The governing council is created by an election among the various members of the FTII, under the supervision of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. This council then becomes the primary authority of the FTII. The Chairman of this council is also the President of the FTII and has final authority as Chairman over all the departments of the FTII. The primary function of this council is decision making regarding all the functions of the Institute.
- Academic Council: The academic council is involved in the matters regarding the academic direction of the institute and also supervises all the courses and student progress in the FTII. This council is directly appointed by the Governing Council.
- Standing Finance Committee: A the name suggests, the standing finance committee executes and decides over all the financial matters of the FTII with respect to its every department. This committee is appointed by and reports directly to the Governing Council of the FTII.
The Director of the FTII is the executive head of the entire Institute and performs all the executive decisions as per the Governing Council.
Presently Mr. Saeed Mirza is the President and Chairman of the Governing Council, whereas Mr. D. J. Narain is the Director of the FTII.

Only 12 seats are admitted per year for each and every of the above courses offered by the FTII.
