Central Board Of Film Certification
The Central Board of Film Certification is a body constituted under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which controls the exhibition and show of movies under the 1952 Cinematography Act.
In India, films are permitted to be shown to the public, only after it receives the certification from the Central Board of Film Certification.CBFC constitutes members as well as a chairman, all of whom are central government appointees. Head office of CBFC is located at Mumbai, while there are regional offices at 9 cities of the country such as Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Guwahati and Cuttack. Advisory panels are formed in each of these regional offices, for assisting in the examination of the different movies presented to it. These members are also nominated by the government by selecting people from various sections of the society, who will render their responsibilities for 2 years.
The process of providing certification is carried as per the guidelines which have been forwarded by the Central Government of rule u/s (B), 1952 Cinematography Act and the 1983 Cinematograph (certification) Rules.
Manner of certification
Films are certified into four important categories.
U stands for unrestricted public exhibition
UA is unrestricted public exhibition but parental discretion is necessary while children below 12 years are watching
A is meaning restricted to adult viewing
S stands for restrictions for persons of any special class
Vision of the board
It is the aim and vision of the Board to make sure that entertainment reaches the audiences in a healthy and proper manner, satisfying the 1952 Cinematograph Act and the 1983 rules of Cinematograph (Certification) Rules.

- Certification is to be processed in responsible and transparent manner
- Those panel members, people in the media and the makers of films should become aware about the certification guidelines and the prevalent trends in cinema through various meetings and workshops.
- Certification is to be carried out utilising modern methods and technology by use of computers and infrastructural upgradation
- Activities of the board has to be transparent through egovernance, disclosures which are voluntary, RTI queries are to be answered and annual report publication
- CBFC has to be converted into a centre of excellence
Necessity of film certification
In India, as a free country, it has been the aim of the government to provide certified movie related materials to be examined before it goes for public viewing. It is a general view that the audio visual medium has a strong influence on the masses. To provide watchable stuff through films, there was required that these movies should be checked for the correctness of the messages, in view of respected personalities from the common people. as a result, the Central Board of Film Certification was promulgated.
