State Bank of Hyderabad was the brainchild of an idea in Hyderabad Deccan ruled by the Nizams. The purpose of its establishment in the year 1942 was to play role of a central bank of erstwhile Nizam state so its name was chosen Hyderabad State Bank.

The last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan offered total support to this bank to grow and play the key role as a banking entity. This bank had once managed the famous coin, the Osmania Sicca—separate currency of Hyderabad state very much common while the British used to rule India.
The Hyderabad State Bank got its new name State Bank of Hyderabad in the year 1956 when the Reserve Bank of India took its control. This bank has the distinction of being the first subsidiary State Bank of India bank.
