Central Bank of India
First commercial Indian bank solely managed by Indians, Central Bank of India was founded on 21 December 1911 by Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala and Sir Pherozesha Mehta. While the Alliance Bank of Simla failed in 1923, Central Bank of India took over Tata Industrial Bank after its acquisition.
This oldest and largest Indian commercial bank has total ownership of the federal India government. Headquartered at Mumbai, it operates through the corporate office and 3,563 branches besides 270 extension counters in various states and Union Territories.
It is one of the 18 Indian wholly public sector Indian banks. Central Bank of India has now sought permission from the Reserve Bank of India for initiating the representative offices in Singapore, Dubai, Doha, London and Hong Kong recently.
The reserves and surpluses of Central Bank of India have been recorded Rs. 6,868.85 crores as on 31 March 2011. This bank has fast growth with the total business recorded in the last financial year crossing Rs. 2,09,757.33 crores. Staff strength is recorded at 37,241 workers serving its different branches in India until the last survey was conducted in the year 2006.
Central Bank of India offers an excellent core banking solution today with effective internet banking system it follows. The government of India nationalized Central Bank of India in the year 1969 alongside other banks.
