Solan district found its place as a District in Himachal Pradesh at the time of reorganisation of the State on 1st September 1972. Solan district encompasses the old princely states of Bhagat, Baghal, Kunihar, Kuthar, Mangal, Beja, Mahlog, Nalagarh, parts of Keonthal and Kothi, and the hilly areas of composite Punjab state which were merged in 1966.

Solan district acquired its name after Solan town which came into existence after formation of cantonment there around the last quarter of 19th century.

These princely states, like few others in Himachal Pradesh, were subjected to the attack of Gorkhas at the break of 19th century and ultimately protected by British Government when the latter got the Gorkhas under their control.

The elevation of Solan district is between 300 and 3000 metres and the mountain parts lie in outer Himalayas forming portion of Shivalik ranges. The shape of the district is rectangular showing a slight bulge on the northern side intruding towards Mandi district.

Religion wise, people of this district belong to Hinduism, Islam, Sikh, Buddhism and others too. People speak Hindi, Punjabi, Pahari and English. Few other dialects are also prevalent in Solan district. Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Buddhist culture prevail here.
