Sirmaur district is considered senior most princely state of the region. Sirmaur, also spelt as Sirmour, became a district of Himachal Pradesh, when this State was constituted in Independent India on 25th January 1971.

This mountainous region has in it, besides its capital town of Nahan, the Shivalik Fossil Park at Suketi, where fossils over 85 million years old have been found.

Sirmaur district has two rivers, Yamuna and Giri, and the latter divides the district almost equally into two regions,Giripar and Giriwar.

People of this district follow Hindu and Islam religions and they speak Hindi, Pahari and Punjabi.

Legends go about as to why the name came to be Sirmaur, one of them being the name of the foremost member of the ancestry bearing that name.

Another legend goes about saying that the ruler at a point of time Raja Madan Singh obtained the curse of a lady got drowned because of the malicious act of one of the courtesans and the entire kingdom was destroyed by floods. In fact, this princely state had its ups and downs, the Rajput princes carrying a surname of Parkash, ultimately went for the help of British Government for securing their kingdom from the encroachment of Gorkhas.
