The district Chamba was founded by Raja Sahil Varman and the new capital was named after his daughter Chmapavati which was later shortened to “Chamba”. Chamba was under the control of Mughal Empire and later by various Sikh kingdoms. Then British took over the power and made a part of the state of Himachal Pradesh

Chamba is situated on the banks of river Ravi. The mountains and rivers of the region increase the scenic beauty of the valley. Tourist destinations like Shimla, Delhi, Chandigarh etc can be easily accessible by road from Chamba. The area is having moderate climatic conditions with temperatures varying from 38 oC to 15 oC in summer and from 15 oC to 1 oC in winter. The best time to visit the place is between March and June.

Majority of the population use Hindi and the local language “Pahari” as the main language. Himachali is also spoken by a minor population. Hinduism is followed by majority of the population along with Buddhism, Sikhism by a minor group.

Chamba is known for its rich cultural heritage. Chamba is famous for its Pahari paintings, making of handicrafts and musical instruments. There are a number of religious and non-religious festivals celebrated in the district, among which the “Suhi Mata Mela” and the “Minjar Mela” are the most important.
