Uttarakhand Tehri Garhwal Hill Station
The source of origin of present name Tehri is very typical. According to the Hi du theology, there three type of sins: Mansa, Vaacha and Karmana. These three sins are called “Trihari”. The word ‘Trihari” is said to be the source of present name Tehri. The original Tehri has been destroyed and remains of that city are presently under water. The city present today is a modern town located at an altitude of 1550-1950mtrs from MSL.The huge lake banked the hill station.
Tehri is the HQ of district Tehri Garhwal located 16 kilometers away from Old district. The huge dam constructed here is the major attraction of this hill station.This is also the largest hydroelectricity generating point in the world. Bhagirathi and Bhilangana are two major rivers that bank this project.Like Chandigarh, New tehri is extremely planned city of the state. Seeing the increasing and regular terrorism in J&K, people are now diverting their destination of hill station. Uttarakhand is emerging as a tourist spot with better amenities and facilities in the field of tourism. Various beautiful places of the town attract visitors. Forestry, greenery and steep high mountain peaks provide a mesmerizing beauty. Weather is subtropical. Means slightly hot in summers, chilled in winter and wet in monsoons. Normally, this place can be visited throughout the year. But, a person will have to carry woolen clothing in winter. Extreme chilled weather may disturb the trip, if not well equipped.
How to Reach
Three modes of transportation are available to access this hill station.
By Air
Nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, located at a distance of 91 kilometers. From airport, taxies and cabs are easily available to the Tehri. From Delhi, daily flights are available to Jolly Grant airport.
By Rail
Rishikesh is the nearest railway station. Major trains are well linked TO THE Rishikesh. Both meters Gauge and broad Gauge trains are available upto Rishikesh.From railway station, private taxies and cabs are available to access this Hill station.
By Road
From ISBT (Kashmiri gate) New Delhi, daily and frequent bus services are available. Uttarakhand state bus services are also available to reach Tehri Garhwal. From other cities, like Haldwani, Nainital, Devprayag and Dehradun, buses are also available.
Places to See
Tehri Dam
This dam is largest in India for producing hydroelectricity.Through Bhakhra Nangal Dam is there but still the yearly production of Tehri Dam is higher. Mrs. Medha Patkar and Baba Amte took a long drive to save the environment disturbance as a result of construction of this dam. But as far as production is concerned, Tehri Dam still stands on No 1 position. More than 72 villages have danger to submerge into the water but no strong steps have been taken from the side of government as yet.
Chamba
This place is located at an average altitude of 1676 mtrs from MSL. A small distance of 18 kilometers is required to reach Chamba. The immense pleasure to a visitor is gifted by nature as lush greenery and dense forestry around the hill station is heavenly.
Weather
Subtropical weather provides the variation in every climate to a visitor. Mercury shuttles between 90C to 120C in summers while in winter the same comes down TO 30 C. Average temperature of Garhwal does not cross the 300 C limit. Though, the summers are easy and cooling for the person coming from plain areas. One must carry woolen belongings while travelling in winter as winters are extreme chilled in this region.
