Sonepat is one of the most significant districts of Haryana. Its administrative headquarters is located in the town by the same name.The district is presently spelt as Sonipat. On December, 1972, Sonepatgotseparated from the formerly Rohtak district and formed a district of its own. It is said that five pandava brothers have found this city and named as Suvanaprastha. It is also believed that this place was demanded by Yudhistir from Duryodhana as a price for peace.

Sonipat was earlier known as Swarnprastha, which means "Golden City”. The city has pre-historic relevance as mentioned inMahabharata.
