Faridabad, located in the south-east of Haryana state, was founded in 1607 by Sheikh Farid. The Sheikh was the treasurer of Emperor Jehangir and a Sufi saint. He built a fort, tank and a mosque to protect the highway that passes through the city. Eventually, the district was carved out of Gurgaon district.

As per the latest census, the population of Faridabad district is approximately 20 lakh residents. Out of which about 40% is rural and 60% is urban. Population density is about 1020 per sq. km. About 3 lakh residents belong to the scheduled caste/tribe category.

The city is located on the plains of the river Yamuna. The Aravalli hills border it on the west and south-west. During the mid-90s, the population grew at a fast pace which has led to most of the land being developed for residential housing. Like several other parts of India, ground water plays a major part for the basic needs of the inhabitants.

Faridabad is one of the main industrial centers of Haryana and of the Delhi NCR region. It has a cosmopolitan nature with people of various castes and religions living together. The general culture is a mix of Haryanvi, Punjabi with a “Delhi touch”. Tourism also plays a significant part in the district. Badkhal Lake complex, Suraj Kund Complex, Aravali Golf Club and Raja Nahar Singh Palace are famous tourist spots of Faridabad District.
