The city of Ambala is located in Ambala district of Haryana state on the border of Haryana and Punjab. The district is mostly famous for its army cantonment, air force base and railway junction. Currently it has gained popularity for its industries, especially scientific instruments, metal casting and kitchen mixer grinders.

Following the malaria epidemic of 1841-42, the British abandoned their cantonment at Saphera and established the Ambala cantonment in 1843. The Ambala Air Force Base was a frontline airfield for several years and is one of the largest and oldest airbases inherited by the IAF, from the British.

As per the census of 2011, Ambala had a population of a little over 11 lakhs residents with an average literacy rate of 82.9%. During Partition, a large part of the Muslim residents were forced to leave the area due to violence. During the late 1980s Ambala was a strong hold of the militants.

Being on the border of two States, there is a heavy influence of Punjabi culture in the district. The food, arts, music and fsticals are all the same celebrated as the ones of Punjab. There are several shrines in the district and three historical Gurudwaras --  Badshahi Bag, Sis Ganj and Manji Sahib Gurudwara. There are also a couple of famous Muslim shrines - Lakhi Shah (associated with Tej-ud-Din Chisti) and Taqwal Shah.
