Gandhinagar is the capital of Gujarat. It is the biggest city of Gujarat located approximately 23 km North from Ahmedabad at the bank of river Sabarmati. The city is among the few well planned city of India. All the administrative offices of Gujarat are located in Gandhinagar. In 1971, the capital of Gujarat was shifted from Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar which was named after Mahatma Gandhi. The city has famous temple of Swaminarayan called Akshardham temple. Gandhinagar lies on the bank of river Sabarmati at 23.22°N 72.68°E with an average elevation of 81 meters. The city is made up of 30 sectors with total area of 53 Sq km. It is connected to other cities like Surat, Mumbai, Jaipur, New Delhi & Chandigarh through a National Highway. Gandhinagar has monsoon climate and three main seasons: summer, monsoon, and winter like the most parts of India. The weather is hot from March to June with maximum temperature reaching to 42-43 degree Celsius. The winter season range from mid-October to mid- February with average maximum and minimum temperature being 29°C to 14°C. The southwest monsoon brings humid climate through June to September and the average rainfall is around 803.4 mm annually. According to 2001 census, the population of Gandhinagar is 195,891 which constitute 53% male population and 47% female population. The average literacy rate of the city is 77.11% with 82% male literacy and 73% female literacy. Both Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad have a combined population of 62 lakhs. History In 1960, when Bombay was split in two different states, Gujarat and Maharashtra, Ahmedabad was made the capital of Gujarat. In 1971, Gandhinagar was made new state capital which was planned and designed by two Indian architects, H.K.Mewada and Prakash M.Apte who had worked as apprentice in the Chandigarh project. The city was named after Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The Gandhinagar was linked with Ahmedabad by direct road. Gandhinagar had a population of 195,891 according to 2001 census. The literacy rate is around 78% with male 82% and female 73% literate. About 11% of the population is under age 6. Gandhinagar is the second well planned city in India after Chandigarh. There are 30 sectors, each having its own shopping centre, health centre, schools and community centers. It is well connected with other cities through air, roads and railways so serve as a business center. Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited has set up a Thermal Power Station in Gandhinagar. At present there is an electronic estate but Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) plans to set up more industries in Gandhinagar. The projects like Software Technology Park and Tech city are also under development. Culture Over 95% populations are Hindus in Gandhinagar. Most of them are Gujarati and it is one of the few cultures where majority of the population are vegetarians. The main community found is Ahirs who sell milk and ghee. Other communities also found are Janis, Islam and Zoroastrianism.The main cuisine is typical traditional Gujarati meal. Many Gujarat dishes are sweet, salty and spicy at the same time. Gujarati Thali which consists of Roti, Daal or Khadi, rice, vegetables and spice is very famous. Other Gujarati dishes are Dhokla, Khandvi, Thepla, Undhiyu, Khichdi, Sutarfeni, etc. The wood crafting is an important craft in Gujarat. The crafts persons also prepare utensils. A unique type of jewelry is made by the tribes of the state. Craftsmen village located in Gandhinagar is famous for its Bandhani sarees and also export wooden printing blocks. The two main festivals celebrated are Makar Sankaranti or Kite Flying festival in January and Navratri which is a Dance festival in September. Makar Sankranti is celebrated with lots of folk dance and flying kites of various colors. Sweets are distributed to celebrate the day. Navratri is the festival of dance. During this nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped. People celebrate by keeping fast for all nine days and dancing on devotional songs after the Puja ceremony.
