Kolahoi Glacier
This Kolahoi Glacier regarded as valley glacier is located in Himalayan range. It is situated in the north-west region and this is approximately 25 kilometres northern region and 15 kilometres southern from the Sonamarg. It lies in the states of Jammu as well as Kashmir.
Geology
This glacier is present at an elevation of 4500 meters and it is one of the highest peaks. Moreover, it has derived its name through Kolahoi Peak and it has the elevation of 5400 meters. This glacier originates below cirques on the northern Kolahoi flank Peak. It is regarded as an important source for the Lidder River. The water gets melt and mixes with the Sind River tributaries. However, this glacier has also been the global warming victims and has also got shrunken in the area that starts from 14km square till 9 km square and this has resulted in the loss of 2 km square in just three decades. It was in year 1974 that glacier got extended till 5 kms long and then it got extended for 32 km long during the time of Pleistocene. This is also regarded as hanging glaciers since it is hollow from inside.
Tourism
This is one of the most important glaciers for Kashmir Valley. It is situated just above Lidder River and this glacier is known for some amazing breathtaking views. One of the sole means through which glacier can be easily reached is trekking and you can also hire ponies or horses for covering some parts of its distance.
