Piran Kaliyar Sharif
History
The Piran Kaliyar is at about 7 kms distance from Roorkee and is considered to be one of the most sacred Shrines for the Muslims in India and is also seen with much respect and regards by Hindus as well. It was built by Ibrahim Lodhi who ruled Delhi in the 13th Century and Sough Asian Sufi Saint of Chishti order was Piran Kaliyar Sharif and succeeded Baba Farid who was the first Sabiriya branch of Chisti order.
History adds on to say that Alauddin Sabir Kaliyar took his birth at Kohtwaal in Multan in 592 Hijri (1196) and was born to Jamila Khatun, the elder sister of Baba Fareed. Syed Abdul Rahim was taken to Pakpattan in 1204 by his mother and thus came under the fold of Baba Fareed. He was then taken care here and was given charge of the kitchen by the Baba. He was so pious that he went to jungle during leisure to eat and then given title as Sabir. He was then the protector of Kaliyar Sharif and on advices of Baba Fareed he went to Kaliyar and stayed there for rest of life and died in 1291.

A man who was a saint and known for his immense knowledge and power was Piran Kaliyar and his studies were spiritual and his uncle Baba fareed was his teacher and Guru. The town later developed in and around Kaliyar was called as Piran Kaliyar and the route of Roorkee and Piran Kaliyar saw the first steam engine in 1851 and Piran Kaliyar happens to be an important place today more famous for a pilgrimage trip. The 13th century Sufi saint of Chisti order Alauddin Ali Ahmed Sabir was called as Kaliyari or Sarkar Sabir Pakand became famous and is an important shrine for Muslims. The Langa Khana Sufi Kitchen where Langar Sufi meal is prepared daily from the Hazrat Shah Sabir Piya Kaliyari time is distributed to the people fully free and his miracles can be explained further as under:
- When a man asked Sabir as to why he was crying, he replied that God had broken the bond with the world and that he had to meet only divine men from now on and that was the time from when no one dared to go near him.
- One day Baba Farid with a turban tied on the head informed Sabir that he is the protector of Kaliyar Sharif and advised him to go and serve the God’s men.
How to Reach
The exact location of Piran Kaliyar Sharif is – Kaliyar Village near Haridwar, Roorkee. To reach Roorkee, which is in Haridwar District of Uttarakhand State, take an Air travel either from Jolly Grant, Dehradun to Haridwar which is the nearest Airport or take Air route from Delhi to Haridwar. From Haridwar, Roorkee is around 30 kms. Delhi is situated at about 175 kms distance. Jan Shatabdi or Shatabdi Express is the train from Delhi which has a stop at Roorkee. From Roorkee, this place is around 20 kms and is easy to reach this place through local bus or Cab.
