Peer Mohammed Dargah
History
The famous Dargah in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, located in Thuckalay is the Peer Mohammed Appa Dargah. Peer Mohammed Sahib was born in Tenkasi of Tirunelveli District in Tamil Nadu and had spent some time in the spiritual world at Peermedu in Kerala and he came to Thuckalay and stayed there. He was also a great and renowned Tamil Poet and has written several books on Philosophy and was very close to the Chera Kings of erstwhile days. It is believed that he was responsible for laying the foundation for the Padmanabhapuram Granite Fort.
The Anniversary of the great poet is performed with gaiety and galore during the full moon day of the Rajap Month and people from both Kerala and Tamil Nadu attend the same in many numbers without the difference of their caste, creed or religion. It is an annual gathering for the people nearby.

The famous saint and also a Tamil Poet, Peer Mohammed Appa Sahib lived in Thuckalay and spread high spiritual feelings amongst the people, more so the Muslims. People from various parts of Kanyakumari, Trivandrum and Nagarcoil gather here during the festival season annually when the anniversary of the spiritual leader is celebrated. Appa Dargah is said to be a famous and renowned Muslim Pilgrim place and the vow of sleeping in the Dargah premises is considered to be a famous one. One can get his wishes fulfilled by sincerely praying here, this is the general belief amongst the locals.
This Dargah is situated at about 35 kms from Thuckalay and there is also other sacred pilgrimage places nearby which is worth visiting, viz Thiruvattar (around 60 kms) temple dedicated to Adi Kesava Perumal. Remains of the old mural paintings relating to 17th century are worth seeing. Chidaral (55 kms) is another small village nearby and is famous for hillock with a cave with rock cut sculptures of Thirthankaras. Thraparappu Waterfalls is another nearby famous place to visit.
How to Reach
One can reach either Trivandrum or Kanyakumari by flight or train and can go to this place either through road or take a cab to reach the place. From Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, this place is around 35 kms and local buses are available in plenty. Also, from Trivandrum in Kerala, this place is around 80 kms and can be covered either through State run Transport buses or Cab or local tourist buses. It is advisable to take up travel through conducted tours, either from Trivandrum or from Kanyakumari which is cost wise quite reasonable.
