History
Khwaja Baqi Billa, a Sufi saint from Kabul, was born at Kabul on 971 A.H (1563AD), hails from a rich lineage as the son of great scholar Qazi Abdul Salam Khilgi and the grandson of Khwaja Ubaid Ullah Ahrar. He started to learn Quran at the age of five and as he grew he had his education under Maulana Sadiq Hilvahi, a famous scholar of those days. Saintliness was beaming in his face right during his early childhood and he always preferred solitude in keeping himself simple, away from worldly aspects. He went to Mavera-un-Nahr, which was a famous center of Muslim saints and got acquainted with a number of Sufi saints from whom he acquired spiritual knowledge.
Once when he was on his learning Sufism, an illumination depicting Khwaja Baha-ud-Din Nashbandi appeared and showered on him spiritual favour. After this incident, he made a spiritual travel to places from Central Asia to India and as he was offering Prayers at Lahore, a strange voice rose from his heart. Like this, Hazrat Khwaja Bai Billah had the Grace of Allah in attaining spiritual qualities in few other occasions, which includes once Khwaja Amkangi advising him at Mavara-ur-Nahr to go to India to establish Naqshbandia Silsila Order there. As the Khwaja was hesitating and leaving the decision to a parrot to come and sit on his hand, which actually happened in his dream. Thereupon, he came to India and settled at a beautiful place along the River Jamuna.
Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah thereafter strengthened the Naqshbandia Order in India and he maintained constant contacts with the Mughal nobility for the reformation of the Muslims of India. He was blessed with a couple of Miracles during this period, when once he made a dual image of himself on a Baker and in the other, he gave his bed to a cat to sleep while he chose to sit on the floor the whole night on a chill winter time.
It is said that Hazrat Billah visited this graveyard once and somehow got his clothes stuck on the mud here which voiced him to declare this place as his final destination.
Legends also say that Khwaja Billah had willed his funeral prayers to be done by one who had never sinned, never skipped a night vigil and never missed a prayer. To everyone’s surprise, when he died, a veiled person appeared from somewhere declaring that the Khwaja had commanded him to lead the prayers and conducted the same. People believe that the veiled person was the Khwaja himself.
Khwaja had also expressed his wish that no dome to be built on his grave and accordingly, the Dargah has an open sky for one to Pray, but even in a hot summer one would not feel any heat in that open space.
Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah R.A chose to go to eternity on 25 Jamadi-ul-Sani 1012 A.H. or 1603 A.D and his grave is now Khwaja Baqi Billah Dargah.
