URS (martyrdom day) festival is celebrated every year here, when millions of people visit this shrine for offering their prayers and present offerings in different form.
History
The Saints Hazrat Khawaja Mohammed Mira Chisti Hussaini (R.A) And His Son Hazrat Khwaja Shamsuddin Urf Shamna Mira Ganja Baksh arrived in Miraj city 700 hundred yrs before when that city was in the hands of a black magician named as Gangna Dhobi. This black magician used to insinuate the poor people with his black magic tricks, exploiting their innocence. He would set fire to trees and farms with his magical prowess.
Khwaja Mira Chisti Hussaini, after his arrival here, started preaching and teaching of Islam to the people of Miraj, thereafter this magician gave up his bad habit of troubling people and surrendered to the Khawaja. He accepted Islam and expressed his wish that he should be buried under Khwaja's feet.
On a particular day, Khwaja was walking on his way bare footed and it was a sunny and hot day. There was a blacksmith working by the road side and he noticed Khwaja walking bare footed. So he thought of making a pair of shoes for him and made the shoes with his own skin peeled out from his thigh. Seeing this Khwaja was wonderstruck and pleased. He asked the blacksmith if he wanted anything so that he would give it to him. The latter asked for the right to cover the first Gallop Sharif which is a pure curtain presented by devotees to the saint on the day of Khwaja's urus, which would continue till the day of judgement. Khwaja agreed to this request and till today that tradition is continuing.
At Miraj, traditionally there is total unity between the Hindus and Muslims, which is symbol of unity in Miraj city, in Maharashtra, which should spread to the whole India.
