West Bengal Durgapur Barrage
This Barrage was constructed over the Damodar River. A tributary of Damodar River named Barakar which is the exact location of this barrage. To overcome the flood situations, which were very often in the area of Eastern side of West Bengal, it was very necessary to protect the population resided in nearby areas. Four dams were planned to construct in order to save the population affected and protect the water of Barakar River for other better usage. The length of this barrage is 692 meters. Total 34 gates have been created in this Barrage for easy and smooth passage of water in need. Each gate is 60ft long and 16 ft high. This Barrage is 39 ft high from ground level.
History
During 1932, another reservoir was constructed over this River Barakar and the construction provided irrigation facility to a big population of farmers. Tilaiya, Maithon, Konar and Panchet dams were in the series of construction. The work to construct all the dams was started together as all these were also supplement of each other.Construction was completed in 1959 and took six years to complete. A separate department named Damodar valley Corporation was raised and all the administrative affairs related to these dams were handed over to the DVC for further perusal. Presently DVC is under the control of Jharkhand government. Durgapur barrage was constructed and later handed over to the Paschim Bang during 1964. In the year 1932, another block was constructed and this also provided irrigation opportunities to the farmers of the area. The small canal built on Damodar River is located at 19 kilometers distance from the Damodar Barrage.
Technical Description
A canal which is started from Damodar Barrage is 136.8 kilometer long and provides irrigation to the area around all the way. Two canals are initiated from this barrage. Left canal is 137 kilometers long and right canal is 88 kilometers long. Water discharge regulators have been installed at both the ends of this barrage. Discharge capacity of left regulator is 260 Cubic Mtrs /second and right regulator is 64.3 Cubic mtrs /second. All the canals initiated from this barrage are 2494 kilometer long.
Attraction
Attraction around this barrage is sufficient. A spot has been created to attract visitors. This sport is not at a large distance from Bardwan district. A small tourist resort has also been there. Transportation facility is available to access this barrage from Bardhman district.
