Rajasthan Kota Barrage
Kota Barrage is one of the most important water reservoirs in the Rajasthan state. This barrage is constructed over Chambal River. The main function of this barrage is to divert the water for irrigation towards Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan through various canals and minors. The water after using it for electricity generation is released from various dams like Rana Pratap Sagar dam, Jawahar Sagar Dam and Gandhi Sagar Dam towards Kota Barrage. The job to divert the water for irrigation purposes is rests with this barrage. This barrage has fourth place in the CVP (Chambal Valley Projects).
History
This dam was complete in 1960. Before construction of this dam, the water of Jawai River and other tributary rivers of Rajasthan wasted and there was no sufficient utilization for waste water in agriculture. Hydro electricity was being generated at Gandhi Sagar Dam, Rana Pratap Sagar Dam and Jawahar sagar dam. But the water was not being utilised in farming. Agricultural land of Madhya Pradesh was also requiring water from the side of Rajasthan as in the area of Madhya Pradesh; there were no means of irrigation available at that time. It was decided to discharge water towards Madhya Pradesh also. A barrage was constructed in Kota city which was made capable to hold huge water for further regulation. In 1960 this dam was completed in all respects and since 16 Jan 1961, Kota barrage started functioning successfully. Presently more than 11,322 acres of land is being irrigated in the area of Madhya Pradesh only. Entire affected area by this barrage is more than 19,978 acres in both of the states.
Technical Portion
Kota Barrage is spread in an area of 27,332 SQKM. The Jawahar Sagar dam which is a small dam to support Kota Barrage, is only having the capacity to hold 99tmc of water. The canal located at the left portion of the barrage is having water discharge capacity of 188 Cubic Mtrs per second and the canal on right side is of 42 Cubic meters per second. The canals and minors connected with this barrage are spread in 2,342 kilometers and irrigate the area of more than 2290 SQKM. According to an agreement, 50% of total water has to be diverted to Madhya Pradesh.
Attraction
The dam itself is a beautiful and cooling attraction. The water flowing scenic beauty and thrust from gates is a mesmerizing view for a visitor. Though this flow has also taken a number of lives of human being as well as animals in past as no communication means were available at that time. But presently, a pre-warning is issued before discharging the water.
