Rajasthan Jawai Dam
Jawai Dam is constructed over Jawai River in Sumerpur division of Pali district in Rajasthan. Luckily there is a village of same name. No co-relation is between the two as this is just due to chance. Jawai Bandh is also the major railway station on the New Delhi-Ahmedabad train route.
History
This dam was constructed by Maharaja Umaid Singh. Foundation of this dam was laid down on 12/05/1946 and the dam completed in all respect in 1957. It took 11 years in construction as the geographical area and financial constraints hampered a lot. During the construction of dam, India got independence and due to this historical event, the work thrust towards other events diverted for a long time. Total cost of this project was more than 2 crore at that time. Jawai dam has the pride to be the biggest in entire western Rajasthan.
Technical Portion
Water storage capacity of this dam is 7887.5 MC and complete area of the dam is 414.05 SQKM. Height of this dam is 18.67 mtrs from ground level. Main feeding strength of this dam is Kalibor and Sei dams. This dam has been given a thick wall support to hold a huge water load. A westerly wind in Rajasthan shakes the water vigorously and this can damage the walls of the dam if not supported well. Bed of this dam is also designed in such a manner that zig zag waves in the upper layer of water may not hamper the lower layer of water at bed.
Attraction
Around this dam, various small places have been developed as picnic spots. People come from nearby cities to spend their weekend at this place. A huge hospital with all the amenities is located at close to this dam. Former president of the country Mr. Gyani Zail Singh inaugurated this hospital.
Crocodile Sanctuary
A small sanctuary is also located near the dam. Various types of migratory birds and typical species of crocodiles are found here throughout the year. A leopard sanctuary is also located near this dam. Cranes, Spot bill duck, Neelgai and Chinkara are also found in this sanctuary. On the banks of the dam, crocodiles often take sunbath in winter season. Other wild animals like Panther, Woolf and Hyena are also found drinking water in the dam.
Bamnera
This is a historical place located near the dam. In this village the temples of 10th Century are located and worship is done in these temples till date. This shows the construction and strength of structure of these temples.
In Sumerpur a big market is established which is specially known for wholesale trade. This market is capable to meet the requirements of locals as well as of outsiders.
Except the above mentioned places a Jawai Pipe line project is also located there which is responsible to provide fresh drinking water to more than 500 villages of the districts Pali and neighboring cities.
