Madhya Pradesh Kolar Dam
Formally inaugurated in the year 1984, Kolar Dam is situated in Saoner region of India’s Madhya Pradesh state. It is nearby Bhopal city and is an important earth-fill dam as a perfect base for the region’s growth that couldn’t be possible without this key initiative for the promotion of this area. The region coordinating geographically at 21.4037454°N 78.8065318°E and this dam having been erected here remains under the control and ownership of state government itself. With its 30.11m or 98.8 ft., height this dam’s total length is 2,910m or 9,550 ft., with complete 1,084 km3 or 260 cu mi volume to make it an important one in the whole region.
History
Kolar Dam has an enriched history since this project was formally incepted and then constant attempts were made to ease its completion on time stipulated for that purpose. Having been constructed on Kolar River, this dam cum reservoir has the total capacity of 31,320 km3 or 7,510 cu mi with its complete surface area of 6,430 km2 or 2,480 sq. mi. This dam is an important landmark in the state from where large chunk of nearby areas are irrigated for agriculture purpose besides sufficient quantity of hydroelectricity generation done and supplied from this place.
This dam became a big landmark soon after it was created and then inaugurated to benefit the masses formally. It now serves to the citizens through two key purposes of supporting in power generation and irrigation activities besides its emergence as one of the locations where tourist activities flourished to the best possible manner.
Effect of the Project
Purpose of incepting Kolar Dam was to mark a perfect niche in region’s growth and development initiatives. The effect therefore is on bringing fast development in the region through its role to supply sufficient power and most notably to boost the total agriculture activities in the whole region. Although there were displacement of locals while this dam had been created but such step was solely for the betterment of region so its impact or effects have been remained worth noticeable.
Power Generation
An important option and purpose for which Kolar Dam had been constructed was to generate power and to supply it to the nearby areas to maintain self-sufficiency in the power sector. It generates sufficient power and has also supported the entire area with its wonderful impact to flourish with the overall growth.
Tapping Dead Storage Potential
There is sufficient trapping dead storage potential in the Kolar Dam which is famous for being a prominent masonry dam in India as one out of the few located here.
Attractions
The attractions in Madhya Pradesh are endless including the Kolar Dam which had been constructed across the Kolar River which is famous for being Narmada River tributary. Its approximately 45m height and huge storage capacity of 270M cm are definitely key attractions to notice and remember in a visit. Whole Bhopal city and the surrounding areas get benefitted from this dam which irrigates it for better maintenance so is it an important tourist spot.
