Karnataka Supa Dam
Supa dam is located in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka state of India. This dam is built to manage the water of Kalindi River to provide irrigation facility to the surrounding area. Construction of this dam was done by HSCL (Hindustan Steel Works Construction Ltd) but at present the same is being monitored by KPCL (Karnataka Power Corporation Limited). Surrounding area of this dam was facing irrigation problems as the water of the river was not diverted towards their filed in scientific manner. The entire agriculture of the area was depending on the monsoon. Also there was a hazard of flood activities in the nearby areas as Kalindi River impounds during monsoon season and calamities are sure. Seeing the above mentioned problems, a planning done on the subject and it was decided to construct a dam in the area so that water can be managed in a better manner.
History
Construction of Supa dam was a history in itself. Initially the dam was constructed by HSCL (Hindustan Steel Works Construction Ltd) but later all the admin affairs of the dam were taken over by KPCL (Karnataka Power Corporation Limited). Construction of the dam was started in 1974 and completion done in 1987. During the year 1985, the mechanical plant of the dam was also commissioned. Thirteen years long time in the construction of the dam was invested as in that time several political issues were prevailing. Some financial constraints were also responsible for this abnormal delay in construction. The name of the dam is derived from Suparulu (God of forests). It is believed that the blessings of the Jungle God are still on the area to make it wet from the water of Kalindi River.
Technical Portion
Height of this dam is 101 mtrs from foundation level and the length is 332mtr. This length is sufficient to prevent the area from diversion of stream of the River responsible to cause flood in the nearby areas. Live water storage capacity of the reservoir is 4115.25 M3. In this plant, two units for generation of Hydro electricity have been installed. Each unit is capable to generate 50 MW Hydro electricity during a calendar year. The grid depending on this dam is divided in four substations. Each substation is responsible to generate 542 units of power in a calendar year. This dam is located between the geographical coordinates 15°16′34″N 74°31′36″E. This dam is concrete gravity dam and reason being the height of the dam is restricted upto 101 mtrs. In this dam 3 radial gates have been provisioned for routine and controlled discharge of water. To generate the required electricity, Francis Turbines engines have been installed there. Total capacity of power generation of this dam is 100 MW per year. Catchment area of this dam is spread over in 1057 SQKM.
Attractions
This dam is developed as a better picnic spot. Various facilities like boating, water scooting have been provided by the tourism department of Karnataka. Approach road to this dam is also in better condition. By Air, By Rail and By road reaching to this dam is possible as the nearest stoppages through all the means of transportation is Uttara Kannada district which is located at 43 kilometers from this site. A park in nearby areas has also been developed by the district authorities who are regularly getting fame as a picnic spot to spend weekends.
