Karnataka Harangi Dam
Harangi water dam is constructed over Harangi River in Kodagu district in Karnataka state of India. This dam is located at a distance of 9 kilometers from main city. Western Ghats hills are the main base of this river valley. The major source of water infiltration in the Harangi River is the loud rainfall in the monsoon season by south west monsoon winds. Length of the Harangi River is approximately 715 kilometers and in the entire flow way of the river, many places have steep flow and turning areas.
History
Somwarpet taluka of Karnataka is the meeting point where Harangi River joins Kaveri River and flows towards the sea. Hudgur village of this area was one of the most affected areas from flood as well as lack of irrigation due to mismanagement of water. Survey was done and the area of Hudgur village was selected for construction of the dam. This dam was completed in 1976. More than 59 villages around the Hudgur were benefited from the dam. A channel on the right side of the dam has a good network of canals which are spread in the vast area to irrigate the land. More than 2563 hectares of land is being irrigated from the right channel network of this dam.
Technical Portion
Geographical coordinates of this dam are between 12°29′30″N 75°54′20″E. Height of the dam has been raised upto 49.99 mtrs including foundation level. This dam is lengthy at 845.82mtrs which is sufficient to protect the area affected from flood. Diversion of the water way and prevention of overflow of the water is adequately maintained by the length of the dam. Catchment area of the dam is 419.58 SQKM and water storage capacity of the reservoir of the dam is 8.50 tmc. Though, this dam is not too large but still it is important water management project in Karnataka state of India.
Attraction
A good attraction point has been created near this dam. Though, the dam site is itself a picnic spot as various entertainment facilities have been developed in the nearby park. Boating, water scooting facilities have been provisioned in the reservoir of the dam.
How to Reach
This dam can be accessed through all possible means of transportation. By Air reaching is also possible as Bangaluru is the nearest airport and from airport, various means of transportation area available to reach the dam site.
By Rail
Kodagu is the nearest railway station. All the major BG trains are well connected though this station. From railway station a short road distance is to be covered to reach this place.
