Konar dam is constructed under the multi dam project taken by DVC (Damodar valley Corporation) in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand. Jharkhand Construction of this dam was initiated in July 1949 and completion done in 1955. This dam is located in close vicinity of Hazaribagh district. Distance of the dam from main city is 41 kilometers and well connectivity is available to reach this place.
A dangerous flood hit the area in 1943 and a big loss of men and material faced. After the flood it was decided to make a solid control over the regular flood incidents. In this process, DVC (Damodar Valley Corporation) was setup in 1948 and to make the series of 4 dams in the region was handed over to the newly established corporation. In the chain of dams, first dam was constructed over Barakar River in 1953 and the Konar dam was the second point of Project Dams. Likewise third dam on Maithon and forth dam on Damodar was constructed in 1959. The design of this dam was prepared by a famous planner Mr. W.L. Voodurin from United States of America. Mr. Voodurin was tasked to prepare the design of eight dams but later restricted with four dams only.
This dam has the height of 48.77 mtrs from normal ground level. The height does not include the foundation depth. The length of this dam is 4535 mtrs and a water reservoir attached with this dam is spread over 27.92 SQKM areas. Geographical coordinates of this dam are 23°56′28″N 85°46′30″E. 21.99’ thick wall has been made for protection of this dam. Gates/spillways have enough step flow to allow the water discharge with requisite speed. The canals network attached with this dam is spread in 1016 kilometers and the area irrigated from the canals is more than 8669 acres. In the northern side of this dam, reservoir has the rear and natural support with gorge type surroundings provide better bed to it.
The area of the dam has been developed as picnic spot. Water sports are permitted in the reservoir as banks of the reservoir as shallow. In 1968, there was a disappointing incident happened in the reservoir when 6 persons were died of sinking. Later some security arrangements were made but regular awareness on the safety norms by the local administration and NGOs of the city have made the matter easier for the visitors. A park near the dam is also a good spot for spending weekends. This place is easily accessible. Hazaribagh is the main railway station to this dam. A maximum of 45 minutes road journey is required from railways station to reach this dam. Hazaribagh is also the nearest airport.
