Bhakra Nangal Dam is situated near borders of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. It is a dam of concrete gravity which is situated on the Sutlej River.
Location of the dam is near gorge which is now submerged and located in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh in the country India. It is the 2nd largest dam in India measuring about 225.55 meters which is 740 feet high and stands on the next side of Tehri Dam which is 261 meters in height. However, the length measurement of this dam is 518.25 meters and is 9.1 meters broad when measured from road. The name of reservoir which stores the water is known as ‘Gobind Sagar’ which can store water up to 9.34 billion cubic meters which is very much sufficient to store the whole drain of many cities and state such as Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab and many other parts of the Haryana State.
The reservoir of the Bhakra Nangal Dam is ninety Kilometers long and spread in the area of approximately 168.35 kilometers. However, in the terms of water storage capacity it is placed as the second biggest reservoir in the country India because the 1st dam is known as Indira Sagar which is situated in the State of Madhya Pradesh which is having the capacity of water storage of 12.22 billion Cubic Meters.
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who was elected as the 1st prime minister in India after freedom had given the name ‘New Temple of Reurgent India’ to this dam and this dam is center of attraction for tourists.
Bhakra dam and Nangal dam are separate dams but many times these dams are together called as Bhakra-Nangal dam.
This dam is considered as a biggest gravity dams if compared with other dams of the world. This dam is 741 feet high which in meters is 226 and if compared with USA’s biggest dam known as Hoover Dam which is having height of 743 feet and is only 2 feet high from Bhakra-Nangal dam. Gobindsagar Reservoir is the name of the reservoir of this dam which is being kept on behalf of Sikh Guru known as Guru Gobind Singh and it is 166 Kilometers in length and it is 3rd biggest reservoir in the country as 1st reservoir is Indira Sagar Dam and 2nd reservoir is Nagarjunasagar Dam. Satluj River flows in between the two hills which are known as Ramgarh Ki Dhar and Naina Devi Ki Dhar. However, JPG image of map nh-43-03 shows location of that Bhakra Village which is original in nature and was submerged when the formation of the dam took place.
This dam is twenty kilometers far from Naina Devi and fifteen kilometers far from Nangal also known as Naya.
The dam plays a great role in controlling the floods from Sutluj-Beas River as well as to help the farmers by providing irrigation water in the adjoining states as well as to produce hydro-electricity. Now, this place is also known as tourist spot for the people as it is having unique architecture and big size.
The role of the dam is when constructed is to provide irrigation water for both the states i.e. Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Second aim is to control the loss which can be affected through floods. This dam is very helpful in irrigation purpose as it irrigates ten million acres of land which is forty thousand kilometer. This dam is having 4 gates of flood in order to control monsoon floods.
Nangal and Bhakra dam houses are generators of hydroelectric power. These generators are located on the sides of both the dams. However, Anandpur Sahib Channel and Nangal Hydel Channel are being utilized for the purposes of irrigation and power generation.
There are 5 turbines in each power plant. There are 2 power houses which is having a capacity of 1325 MW flank on both sides of river Satluj. Power house of left contains 5 * 108 MW turbines Francis and the right one contains 5 * 157 MW.
Power which is generated here is being supplied in the states of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Gujrat as well as to many other consumers such as National Fertilizers Ltd., situated in Chandigarh.
Tourist Destination And Attraction
It is the 2nd highest dam in the country which increases the tourist flow that come here to visit this reservoir and location. Distance is approximately 30.-35 Kilometers from Ganuwal to Bhakra Dam.
Takht Shri Keshgarh
This dam is situated in the Anandspur Sahib city which is also Khalsa’s birthplace which is also termed as Sahib and considered as a biggest 5 five Sikh institutions in the country. This was established in the year 1689 in the month of March dated: 30th. It is basically a respectable site for Khalsa Group. As we know that the introduction of Khande Di Pahul happened here. A special ceremonial function was organized by him in 1699. In this function nearly thousand Sikhs took part. While visiting Ropar, one must visit this place as it is pious and religious.
