Chhattisgarh Dudhawa Dam
Dudhawa dam has been constructed over Mahanadi River in Dhamatri District in Chhattisgarh state of India. The dam was planned in 1951 and after two years, the execution was started and after putting the concerted efforts till eleven years, the dam was completed in all respect during 1964. The village Dudhawa is the exact location of construction of this dam. This dam is located at 21 kilometers distance from Sihawa town and 29 kilometers from Kanker. This dam was initially intended for irrigation projects but alter drinking water supply responsibility was also added as an additional responsibility.
History
During the dangerous flood of 1950 in Madhya Pradesh, it was come to know that majority of the land in the area was not managed with the view of flood hazard and during monsoon season, maximum areas faced submergence hazard in the entire state. A vast and detailed demographic survey was done in the state to earmark the areas which were having flood potential. Dhamatri district was also one of the places earmarked for the purpose. Over Mahanadi, a dam was planned to be constructed near village Dudhawa for better water management and control over the water of Mahanadi in monsoon season. 2284 families were affected during construction of this dam and later relocation of all the affected families done under govt. supervision with better compensation. Re-organisation of Indian states and also the tough period of Indo China war could not create an impact over the construction and finally the dam completed in 1964.
Technical Portion
Height of the dam is restricted 30.53 mtrs including its foundation and 6 mtrs foundation has been laid out. The wall of the dam is 21.11 ft thick to provide tough support in taking the load of huge water storage. Length of Dudhawa dam is 2,906.43 mtrs which is self explanatory regarding the importance of this dam. Water reservoir attached to this dam is having the catchment area of 625.27 km. Geographical coordinates of this dam are 20°18′28″N 81°46′18″E. Main purpose of construction of this dam is irrigation and generation of hydroelectricity. Water level of the reservoir is restricted at maximum level of 427.54 mtr. MDDL of Dudhawa dam is 409.96. Total 121 spill ways have been provisioned in this dam as the length of the dam is much than other dams. 3,799.16 Th ha land has been affected in irrigation by this dam and the forest area affected from this dam is 349.88 th ha. Total 33 villages have been earmarked as fully affected by the construction of this dam. Total 726 families have been directly affected due to construction of this dam.
Attraction
Dam site is an attraction itself as the nearby area of this place has been developed by the government of the state. Boating, water scooting facilities have been provided by the concerned authorities. This place has well connectivity with the other places of interest. By road connectivity is good as Sihawa and Kanker are the nearby townships of this dam.
Hathi Kot, Amrit Kund and Dantheshwari caves are some of the other interesting places for tourists. In this area, trekking is also available as another adventures option for tourists. In the nearby areas of the dam, a wildlife sanctuary is also located and good area to visit.
How to Reach
Dudhawa dam is well connected by rail and road routes. Dhamatri is the nearest railway station. All the major trains are directly connected to this station from other parts of the country.
By Road
Dudhawa can be accessed by road as total distance from Sihawa and Kanker is 21 and 29 kilometers respectively. Being a tourist place, a lot of road transportation facilities are available on regular basis on affordable charges.
