Andhra Pradesh Prakasham Barrage
This barrage was conceptualized in 1798. East India Company carried out a detailed survey and deputed its experienced officers in the task. After the recommendation of Major Cotton’s report, the dam construction was started in 1852 and after a fast work process; the completion of this dam was done in 1955. A long canal is also initiated from this dam which passes through the nearby city Vijayawada. This barrage is also being used as a road cross over the Krishna River. This barrage was re-named to honor the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Mr. Tanguturi Prakasam. This barrage is helping in irrigation more than 12 lakhs acres of land. The barrage is successful in its objective to provide irrigation facilities.
History
Since, 1839 the process to build a barrage on Krishna river near this place was in action but due to some accurate technical advises, the process was not getting required pace. At a little later in 1850 the correct decision was taken and in next year the construction started. Various engineers and technicians made their concerted efforts in every aspect of this dam and helped in speedy completion of the job till 1855. During the construction 4 months were restless construction when all the men deployed at this task worked continuously irrespective of night. This was an outstanding example of hard work done on any project in the entire world in 19th century. This barrage is located in geographical coordinates 16°30′22″N 80°36′18″E.
Technical Portion
Length of this barrage is 1223.5 mts. There are 37 spillways have been made to regulate the discharge of water. Channels attached to this barrage are directly connected with the canals at both ends. Each channel has a group of canals which irrigate the surrounding areas and also cross the Vijayawada district. This barrage is also a road (like a bridge) and helps to regulate the traffic. Gates of the barrage are having largest gates and crane chain available in any barrage of India. This barrage is seems like a lake as the water reservoir has stability of water because of easy and frequent discharge of water. Waves of the reservoir are not disturbing and dangerous.
Attractions
This barrage is also a picnic spot. The lake around the barrage is not so deeper and has a shallow effect on the sides thus a good picnic spot. Boating,(Motor and Paddle) water scooting, and Parasailing are done here. A proposal to start sky diving was also projected with state government but due to risk factor, the approval could not be granted till date. In the lake water of this barrage some typical migratory birds are often seen. Cranes, spotted ducks are the mostly find bird species of this place. This place is well connected with the roads and rails. By air access is also possible as Vijayawada is also a nearest airport. Transportation is easily available to this dm from airport and railway station too.
