St Johns Church Secunderabad

Country India
Denomination Church of South India (Previously Anglican)
Dedication St. John the Baptist
Diocese Diocese of Medak
Province Secunderabad

St. John’s Church was sanctified and later dedicated in the year of 1813. It is most ancient church in the twin cities of Secunderabad and Hyderabad. Being simply known as St John’s, this church earlier served the spiritual needs of the force of Britain, which was stationed at Lancer’s line lying in Secunderabad but presently works as a big cosmopolitan congregation belonging to Anglicans in the town.

History

Soldiers, non-commissioned officers and military officers belonging to the British army, used to worship St. John’s church. The Christians of India along with British civilians were housed in the south wing of this church. The service of military engineering also attended to the maintenance of this church.

Architecture

St. John’s Church is in the shape of cruciform. Its ceiling made up of Rangoon Teak is given support by powerful columns, which are made as per stringent rules and regulation, chiefly called as Tuscan order. This order is a simple version of the order of Doric.

In the year of 1914, electricity was installed. Nevertheless, the pankahs progressed for the domes only in the year of 1918 soon after the war. In the year of 1914, open spaces and aisles were aesthetically patterned and tiled. Marble steps were kept from the sanctuary to the chancel. Latest telescopic brass altar rails were raised. One likes to overlook at the bottom of the altar nearby the brass rail, three rounded pieces of art floor which covers the whole floor with tiles of Minton of Pascal lamp and also the signs of Omega and Alpha on both sides.

Organ

The military Band, which was present in the attendance at the services of the Parade on Sundays had the influence of fading voices thereby resulting in the congregation yielding no desires of singing against the band. The organ, which is used as an accompaniment to the services of Parade, results in a good response of the singing. Hence, the pipe organ became an important part of this church.

The Tracker Action Great Organ was constructed with willing contributions gained from the members of this church. Extra pipes were joined by various families as thanksgiving activity. Twelve pipes, the Gamba Stop and the Lieblick Gedackt Stop were added this great organ in the year of 1916. The great organ retains a minor organ case right in principles, contours and form. This hides the work of pipe and removes dust and damp. Shades and Carvings lessen the weightage of monotony.

T.V. Comfort, who is a member of the royal school of church music and also the music co-coordinator, installed the third manual.
