Surguja is a district in the northern part of the state of Chhattisgarh.

History:

The presence of various temples stone carvings and archaic remains show the evidence of existence of this region for a long time. According to holy books, Lord Rama had visited Surguja during his fourteen years of "Vanwaas" period. There are many places in connection to epic of Ramayana. Many places are named after Lord Rama, Laxman and Goddess Sita.

Demographics:

Major population comprises tribal population. Pando and Korwa are among the primitive tribes, who still live in forest. The Pando tribe believes themselves as the member of "Pandav" clan of epic Mahabharata.

Geographically:

This district lies between 23 37’ 25’’ To 24 6’ 17’’ north latitude and 81 34’40’’ To 84 4’40’’ east Longitude. 244.62 km long east to west and 167.37 broad norths to south, this land has as area of about 16359 Sq. Km.

Culture:

Sonabai is a clay sculptor famous for her tribal and folk art form. The first Asian film to win a Green Oscar, ‘The Last Migration’, was filmed in Surguja by the wildlife film maker Mike Pandey
