Kanker is a district located in the southern region of the state of Chhattisgarh. The district's economy is based on agriculture. This is the main source of livelihood of tribes. The land here is hilly and forested.

History:

Kanker District has been inhabited by people since very long time, at the onset of Stone Age. Kanker State, which was independent since beginning, was ruled by King Satkarni of the Satavahana dynasty in AD 106. After the downfall of Satavahanas, Kanker was controlled by Chalukyas, the Nags, the Vakatakas and the Guptas subsequently until the Chandra dynasty came to power. Later, Marathas ruled this state followed by the British.

Kanker is located on the longitudes 20.6-20.24 and latitudes 80.48-81.48. The total area of the district is 5285.01 square kilometers. The population is 651333.

Geographically:

Kanker is surrounded by five other districts of Chhattisgarh state: Bastar District, Dhamtari District, Durg District, NarayanpurandRajnandgaon District. Five rivers namely the Mahanadi River, Doodh River, Hatkul River, Sindur River and Turu River flow through the district.

Culture:

Approximately fifty percent of the population is tribal. Many wonderful forms of local handicrafts, including wood crafts and bamboo crafts are practiced here. Rice is majorly grown in this region. However wheat, sugarcane, Moong, Tilli and maize are the also important crops along with various fruits and vegetables such as bananas and mangoes.
