Dhamtari district is situated in the fertile plains irrigated by the Mahanadi River. It was officially formed on 6th July 1998. Dhamtari has more than 106 Rice mills.

History:

Dhamtari District is situated in the fertile plain region of Chhattisgarh. Dhamtari district was declared as a district on 6th July 1998 when Raipur district was divided along with Mahasamund.

Demographics:

Dhamtari District is situated between 20°42' N latitude and 81°33' longitude. As per 2001 census, the total population of Dhamtari is 719,065, out of which 350962 are males and 352607 females. 476,945 (66%) are tribal peoples.

The district has a total area of 2029 sq km with an altitude of 305m above sea level. The district shares its borders with Raipur District to the north and south, and partly Orissa state to the east and west.

Geographically:

Mahanadi River flows through this district and is the major water resource. Its tributaries are Sendur, Pairy, Sondur, Joan, Kharun and Shivnath. Dhamtari district has fertile land due to the regular irrigation from these rivers. Paddy is grown in abundance in Dhamtari and is also the main crop of this region.
