Dantewada is named after the presiding deity of the town ‘Ma Danteshwari’. It is surrounded by hills and valleys, rivers and lush green forest. Dantewada is also home to different wildlife species such as the Tiger, Leopard and Deer.

History:

Dantewada derives its name from deity of the town ‘Ma Danteshwari’. Ma Danteshwari is the most revered and worshipped Goddess by the people living in this area and is an incarnation of Shakti.

Demographics:

As per 2001 census, the total population of Dantewada is 719065, out of which 356502 are males and 362563 females.

Geographically:

Dantewada is situated at 28-30°N 58-43°E. The district is surrounded by three different states with different cultures and traditions. It shares its border with Maharashtra in the west, Orissa to the East and Andhra Pradesh to the south.

Culture:

Dantewada is inhabited by several tribal groups such as Muria, Maria, Dhurwa, Halba, Bhatra, Gonds etc. They perform songs and dances during various fares and melaswhich add colors to the pleasant rural life of the district. Dance forms like ‘DandamiMariyas’ or ‘Gonds of Bison Horn’ dancing in groups is certainly a treat to watch. 

Apart from their dance forms, the Tribes of Dantewada are also famous for their artistic excellence. The artisans are capable of producing outstanding crafts with Metal,Terracotta, & Bamboo-Crafts etc.
