Meghalaya Krem Lymput
Krem Lymput is located in the north eastern state of Meghalaya. The cave is in Khasi hill 6 km away from the village of Nongiri. Meghalaya is known for its rains and caves. Meghalaya is known as the wettest place on earth and with 1300 caves scattered around the state it is a land of caves too. Mawsynram is located in the Khasi hills of Meghalaya which is known as the area receiving the heaviest rainfall in the world. Formerly Cherrapunchi was known for the heavy rainfall. But in recent times Mawsynram snatched the title away.
Meghalaya has certain geographical features which forms the cave around the state. Meghalaya has rich limestone deposits. Combined with the heavy rains in the area the limestone deposits undergo changes. It is a chemical reaction as the limestone consists of calcium carbonate. This process goes on uninterrupted for millions of years and thus caves are formed. All the limestone caves in Meghalaya are the artwork of nature. Man has nothing to do in its making. Realizing its aesthetic value and potential man tries to preserve it as a salute to Mother Nature.
Architecture
This is one of the massive limestone caves of Meghalaya. Getting into the cave is fairly easy. The entrance to the cave is small due to the massive boulders around the cave. The entrance of the cave is hidden from view too.
The main pathway to the cave is also small and the upper portion of the cave is inclined inwards making it more small and congested. It runs uninterrupted for about 1km. This main pathway is opens to a broader one. This broad pathway is known as “way to heaven” The way to heaven opens to big galleries. There are immense calcite formations here.
Krem Lymput is a big cave no doubt. It is 6641 m in length. The main passage way opens to several rooms. One of the rooms is called Mughal rooms. It is a massive one with 25meter width, 2meter height and 75 meter length. There is a window inside the cave which opens upward to the jungle.
Krem Lymput is one of the easiest caves to explore. It is not at all strenuous or worrying. The cave promises some fantastic views around it too.
How To Get There
By Air
Krem Lymput is situated near Cherrapunji. The nearest airport is at Shillong. Cherrapunji is 60km from Shillong which is the capital of Meghalaya. The domestic airport is known as Umroi airport. Shillong is well connected to all cities of India. Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati is the nearest international airport to Cherrapunji.
By Rail
Guwahati is the nearest railway station to Cherrapunji. Guwahati is 180 km away from Cherrapunji. Guwahati is well connected to all major cities of India.
By Road
The state owned buses ply from Shillong to Cherrapunji. They are easily available.
