Wellington Cantonment
WellingtonCantonment is a Military establishment in the Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu, housing a Regimental Centre for Indian Army’s Madras Regiment, and it has many unique features such as
- Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, who passed away in 2008, belongs to this place and the historic Black Bridge which was constructed here in 1858, and once referred as Waterloo Bridge, is now named after him.
- Wellington Cantonment is the place where the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) offer training to middle level officers of all the three wings of Indian Armed Forces and to Officers of a few other Civil Service departments.
History
Nilgiris District, where the present Wellington Cantonment exists, was mentioned in the records of 930AD, as a land of swamps, where Todas and Badagas inhabited, however, after changing hands among many hill station chieftains from Hoysala King, Vishnuvardhana, East India Company got possession of this area in 1799AD as a result of the Treaty of Srirangapatanam , although Englishman visited this place only in 1812 and the first regular British troops entered Wellington barracks only in 1854, when this place was established as a military Cantonment, this location known at that time as Jakatalla, later named Wellington after Sir Arthur Wellesly, who was called Wellington in later years.
Wellington is now category II Cantonment, established in 1854, with the Cantonment Board consisting of 14 members, with 7 elected and 7 appointed Members, administering the facilities in the Cantonment.
Demographics
According to 2001 India census, Wellington has a population of 20,220, of which Males forming 54% and females 46%, this place maintaining an average literacy rate of 82%, which is above national average, 12% of the population being children under 6 years of age.
How to Reach Wellington Cantonment
Wellington Cantonment can be reached through all the three means of transport, rail, road and air, Nilgris hill station being closer to Coimbatore, having comprehensive rail links, roadway connections and an Airport, while travel by the narrow gauge toy train to Wellington from Mettuppalayam will be by itself a pleasure for everyone.
Facilities
Wellington Cantonment Board provides all facilities that a civic community needs to the residents, while educational facilities of Wellington is well spoken, with Brindavan Public School, an eminent residential school, giving praiseworthy education, while the other schools here, viz., Army Public School and Kendriya Vidyalaya both maintaining excellent results in CBSE and Plus 2 examinations.
