Tiruchirappalli Cantonment

Tiruchirappalli cantonment is not a Military Cantonment nowadays, but more a residential area where a small part of Tiruchirappalli Cantonment area is held as Cantonment barracks where Military Officers’ reside, with good living facilities, including a Tennis Court, Golf link and various sports related activities carried out in a closed and well secured premises, whereas a rifle club is functioning in a separate area called Khaja Malai.

History

Tiruchirappalli is an ancient city in Southern part of India, once ruled by Tamil kingdoms, its earliest settlements having been in the second millennium BC, a section of Tiruchirappalli called Uraiyur having been  the  capital of the Early Cholas during  third century BC to third century AD , Uraiyur  referred as ‘Orthoura ‘ by Ptolemy, the renowned historian.

Starting from  medieval period’s Pallava king Mahendravarman I  ruling  over this place in the 6th Century, many kingdoms  and dynasties, such as Chola, Pandia, Vijayanagaram  holding the fort, ultimately when it fell in the hands of British East India Company obtained  from Chanda Sahib for whom they won Walajah, this city found a place for a Military cantonment during 1801AD.

Demographics

As per 2001 Government of India census, Tiruchirappalli has a population of 752,066 with a density of 5,127 persons per sq.km. , population equally distributed between men and women.

How to Reach Tiruchirappalli Cantonment

Tiruchirappalli is well connected by road with National Highways NH 45, NH 45B, NH 67, NH 210 and NH 227 passing through the city, with abundant public transport vehicles plying throughout 24 hours of the day.

Tiruchirappalli Junction  being an important railway junction,  a number of fast moving trains pass through this Rail station, with direct trains connecting destinations on all directions, like  Jammu Tawi in the North, Kolkata in the East, Mumbai in the West and of course plenty of trains to Chennai and cities of Kerala as well as Karnataka.

Tiruchirappalli Airport is an international airport, busy with domestic and international traffic.

Educational Facilities

Tiruchirappalli was considered as an important educational hub even during British times, which is a fact even today, with a number of educational institutions housed here, such as St. Joseph's College, Holy Cross College, The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) college, National College, Bishop Heber College, Jamal Mohamed College and the Government Law College in the main stream.

There are about 35 engineering colleges in Tiruchirappalli and close by areas, which include a National Institute of Technology, premier Management Institutes, such as Bharathdasan Institute of Management and Indian Institute of Management, besides a Medical College and other professional educational centres.
