Shillong Cantonment

Shillong Cantonment is a Military establishment in Meghalaya, while it is considered a romantic city and important tourist destination of North East of India, often mentioned as the Scotland of the East because of its striking similarity with the landscape of Scotland, the hill station Shillong is always being admired for its ever green panorama and moderate climate, with the exception of deep winter times.

History

Shillong Cantonment is a Military Cantonment established in the year 1885CE in the East Khasi Hills district in the Meghalaya State of India, Shillong being the Capital of the State, lying in an altitude of 4990 ft. above sea level, the town formed originally in the year 1864, but was rebuilt again inn 1897 due to an earthquake destroyed the entire place.

Shillong is a beautiful Hill station, particularly for Honeymoon couple, while the Shillong Cantonment is in the midst of Shillong Municipal area and the National Highway NH40 passes through the Cantonment area.

How to Reach

Shillong neither has rail links nor a proper air connection; however Shillong is having motorable roads linking all major northeastern states, public transport buses running frequently, although one can reach Shillong after a picturesque drive of 128 kms from Gauhati airport.

There are two major National Highways passing through Shillong, which are National Highway 40 linking Guwahati and National Highway connecting Tripura & Mizoram -NH 44A.

Private operator buses and the State transport buses from other states have schedules to and from Shillong on all days, while Sumo taxi service is a popular mode of transport from places like Guwahati, Dimapur, Agartala and other north eastern destinations.

Demographics

As  per 2001 Census of India Shillong Cantonment ‘s  population of 12,385, Males  accounting for 57%, female population 43%, with  Shillong Cantonment having an average literacy level of 74%, which is  higher than the national average, 12% of the population  under 6 years of age.
