Secunderabad Cantonment Board

Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) is the civic administration agency for the city of Secunderabad, India.

Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) takes care of the civic administration of the most of the parts of Secunderabad city and a few parts of the Hyderabad city because there is large military population live here right from British days, while mostly the infrastructure management and civic administration in the Military Cantonment part are handled by the SCB, functioning under the Government of India’s Defence Ministry.

Secunderabad is classified as  Class-I cantonment, while in terms of population and spread area it is the largest among the  62 cantonments in India , incidentally  one of the largest in the world, a monumental Clock Tower built here to honor British Officers in 1860CE in an area of 10 acres of land.

As per 2001 Census, population coming under Secunderabad Cantonment Board is around 29,165, with literacy rate 52.92%.

 History

Historically speaking, cantonments are places where the army of colonial government had exclusively quartered in an attempt to hold the armed forces totally insulated from the influence and control of Civilian Governments.

The Secunderabad Cantonment, which covers now a number of defence establishments, was formed in 1798 after the British East India Company signed an alliance with Hyderabad’s Nizam Sikander Jah acquiring an area north of Hussain Sagar Lake, naming it Secunderabad after the Nizam.

The officiating Military Station Commander is  the President of the  Secunderabad Cantonment Board, who is the GOC of the Indian Army's Secunderabad-based Andhra Sub Area, while  the CEO of the Board is an officer appointed by the Central Government, who also acts as its Secretary and half of the board is filled by elected members, the remaining are appointed by the Government, the District Collector of Hyderabad and military officers nominated by the Board's President, the board inviting the local MP and MLA as special invitees to the Board meetings.
