Sagar Cantonment

Sagar Cantonment is a Military Cantonment established in Sagar District of Madhya Pradesh State, which carries lot of antiquity and heritage.

Sagar, the city in which the cantonment is based,  is also a city of lakes, while some very interesting places  in and around Sagar exist, which are Rahatgarh Waterfalls Khimlasa Forts , Garhphra Mountains and Temples, etc.

Sagar city is a developing industrial area, many new industries sprouting up in the city, considered as the heart of Madhya Pradesh, while another not worthy place here is the medical research centre known as BhagyodayTirth.

History

The destination Sagar was the capital of a Maratha governor, who settled   here in 1735, later through a treaty in 1818, at the end of the Third Anglo-Maratha War, the major part of the present Sagar district was given to the British, Sagar town becoming the capital of Saugor and Nerbudda Territories belonging to the North-Western Provinces, which later became part of the Central Provinces, added to Jabalpur Division in later periods.

During the 1857 revolt, the whole of Sagar district was held by the rebels, with the  exception of the town and fort, where  the British were home imprisoned for eight months, British rule restoring only by March, 1858 after the rebels were contained. British cantonment at Sagar was formed in early 20th Century, encompassing a battery of artillery, a native infantry regiment, native cavalry and a detachment of a European regiment.

After India's independence in 1947, the above area then called Central Provinces and Berar became the State of Madhya Pradesh.

How to Reach

Sagar Cantonment is approachable by trains and by road transport, while air travel is possible through flights from Bhopal, and Sagar has a very good rail links which connect it to major cities in india and bus tickets can be made for inter state buses online through the Travel websites, to travel by State transport buses and also Volvo or luxury buses operated by private carriers.

Demographics

As per 2001 Census, Sagar Cantonment’s population is around 35,872, males constituting 52% and females 48%, with literacy rate 72%, which is above the National Average, the population of children below the age of 6 constituting 15% of the total population.

While the official language of the city is Hindi, English is widely used, the dominant religion being that of Hindus.

Facilities

Educational facility is the main attraction of Sagar town, University of Sagar being the first University established in Madhya Pradesh, besides which there are a number of Schools and Colleges providing education benefiting the Sagar Cantonment residents.
Health Care is rendered by the Government Hospital, while there are sporadic nursing centres and dispensaries available in the City.
